In 2008, inspired by the Beijing Olympics and an idea, Chinese farmer and volunteer, "Junior" Yang put his creative juices to work with a plastic pipe, some paper, glue, and paint. It was a masterpiece! He even rigged a fan into the pipe that blew the cellophane ribbons up like the eternal Olympic flame! In 2011, John Wells
of Titus, Alabama, put his craftsmanship to work creating the new
Friendship Torch Chest. Made from Spanish Cedar, he designed the chest to be lightweight and fit the Friendship Torch along the many photos and gifts that would be added in its journey.
The Manos Friendship Torch is being passed from volunteers to children, from teachers to students, and from city workers to village farmers. Each year, the the Manos Torch is given a make-over by volunteer artists, representing the kind of growth and change Manos itself aims to transpire and embodies our mission: "uniting the world through the sharing of cultures, ideas, and education."
